Unlock an Exhilarating Career as a Sport Coach in South Africa
Are you ready to ignite your passion for sport and fitness? Have you always been interested in sports sciences?
Do you dream of empowering athletes and individuals to reach their full potential? Or enter the world of sports?
Becoming a sports coach in South Africa can be a truly fulfilling and rewarding career path no matter the sport code you choose to become a coach for. So many people think that they have to be athletes themselves or be excellent sportsmen to become a coach, however this is not entirely true. If you have a passion for sport and always wanted to become part of the sport industry but never had the confidence just because you are not a great athlete yourself - you only have to gain the experience, knowledge and correct qualifications to become a sport coach.
It is therefore wise to consider studying towards a National Certificate in Coaching Science (NQF Level 5) with the HFPA to pursue your dream of becoming a coach for any discipline!
Let us help you with the correct steps in starting your career as a sport coach.
Step 1: Meet the Basic Requirements
Kickstart your journey by meeting the basic requirements to become a sport coach and obtain the in-depth knowledge on the various aspects of sport. Requirements that would be considered by education institutions to allow you admission into a coaching qualification will include the following:
•Being at least 18 years old
• Hold a Grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification (NQF Level 4)
• Possessing a valid First Aid Level 1 certificate
If you do not have a NQF Level 4 qualification - you can still study towards becoming a coach - your route will just be a little different. You can apply for our National Occupational Certificate Fitness Instructor (NQF Level 4) which, on successful completion, will give you access to the National Certificate in Coaching Science.
Step 2: Choose a Sport or Discipline
South Africa boasts a vibrant array of sports and disciplines, each with its unique coaching demands. Select a sport or discipline that sets your soul on fire and leverages your strengths! Consider becoming a soccer coach, dance coach, rugby, netball, cricket or athletics coach - the possibilities are endless.
Step 3: Acquire the Necessary Qualifications
Elevate your coaching prowess with the Health and Fitness Professionals Academy's (HFPA) comprehensive National Certificate in Coaching Science. Modules covered in this qualification include subjects such as:
- Sport Coaching Principles
- Exercise Training Principles
- Sport Team Management
- Occupational Health & Safety
- Diversity Equity Management
- Research Methods
- Sport Code Electives
Step 4: Gain Practical Experience
Immerse yourself in the world of coaching and sports psychology by gaining hands-on experience. As part of your Workplace Integrated Learning, students are required to work 300 practical hours to gain hands-on experience and achieve the outcomes of the qualification. Volunteer to coach at local schools, clubs, or community centres, while you learn from seasoned coaches. All our campuses are based at excellent gym facilities and sport centres where you will be exposed to different sporting codes. HFPA is also the academic arm of the UXi Sport International Rugby Institutes as well as the UXi Netball Institute - where our students will gain experience from seasoned professionals while completing their workplace hours!
