Studying towards a sport and fitness qualification, or physical education, can be more daunting than studying for a business subject. Studying for an exercise science exam requires effective study techniques to master the complex topics of the human body, exercise techniques, and nutrition principles to achieve academic success.

Strategies for optimal learning

Here are 10 quick tips for you to master the art of studying towards a sport and fitness qualification and to enhance your academic performance:

  1. Set specific goals - breakdown your study material into manageable topics and set goals for a specific day to study particular topics. Do not forget to also set physical fitness goals in the process, as it is imperative for you to stay active during any exam period, the effect of physical activity on the human body and brain function is profound.
  2. Create a schedule - allocate sufficient time to your manageable topics and highlight each topic you have studied and mastered as you go. Make time in your schedule for both exercise and academic preparation.
  3. Active recall - summarise key concepts in your own words and set self-test quizzes to establish how well you can recall content.
  4. Practical learning - apply your theoretical knowledge by offering workouts to your family members, explain physical activity interventions to them and encourage them to engage in physical activity. Teaching others reinforces your own learning, practical skills and cognitive function.
  5. Visual learning - visualise the human body to comprehend complex anatomy and exercise movements, create illustrations to support your learning. Visual learning is a long term study method that assists you to recall from memory in the distant future.
