Higher education is a world-wide concept that refers to further learning after secondary education (high school). It is an optional and final stage of formal learning that focuses highly on professional development and is usually delivered at universities, colleges and institutions of technology. In South Africa the DHET and the CHE are responsible for the accreditation of public and private higher education institutions and learning programmes. Within this role their main responsibility is the quality assurance and promotion of higher education in the country.
One of the main reasons for programme accreditation is to protect students against poor quality programmes.
