Functional training has its origins in rehabilitation, where physiotherapists, occupational therapists and other health professionals treated movement disorders through a functional approach that incorporated multi-joint exercises that mimicked daily tasks – such as sitting, bending and reaching. This approach has now become extremely popular in the fitness industry where trainers see the benefits of exercises that allow individuals to perform the activities of daily life more easily and without injuries.
It has also become popular in sport with athletes training to emphasise the body’s natural ability to move. And there has been an explosion in crossfit training which incorporates functional exercises in a high-intensity boot camp style workout.
This course will teach you all the principles of functional training and equip you with the skills to incorporate functional training into your current service offering or offer functional training boot camp classes. It also covers functional training equipment, including, battle ropes, sandbags, core sticks, suspension straps, medicine balls, half moon balls and kettlebells.
